Neo Avanti: 2010 Stellar Scholars Avanti Awards
A painting will be unveiled at this year’s Avanti Awards
ceremony by renowned designer and illustrator Don Weiland, proposing a Golden Anniversary Neo Avanti that could
be built on a 1963-’64 Avanti or 1965-to-late ‘70s Avanti II.
As the Avanti approaches the 50th anniversary of its debut
in 1962, Stellar Scholars issued a challenge among high
school students to design a style-setting, fastback sports
coupe that embodies rapid transit in enclosed comfort for
driver and three fellow passengers.
This year’s Avanti Awards program will be held April 25
during a small ceremony at the Automotive Heritage Museum, 100 East Cross Street, in Ypsilanti, Michigan, a halfhour’s drive west of Detroit. The Museum is located adjacent
Miller Motors, the country’s last Hudson dealership.
The museum is known for its “orphan cars”, nameplates
that have long passed from manufacture into automobile immortality – from Hudson to Kaiser and from Studebaker to
the meteoric Tucker. The building was Preston Tucker’s father’s machine shop.
